The first edition of the
Copa America, unofficial and never recognized by
CONMEBOL, was held in
Argentina from May 29 to June 12, 1910. The original name of this competition was
Copa Centenario Revolución de Mayo 1910 but was then was renamed
South American Championship by
CONMEBOL.
This contest was in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the
May Revolution. It was the first international tournament in
South America where more than two football nations participated. Previously, there were only international competitions between the football teams of
Uruguay and
Argentina, as the
Copa Newton, the
Copa Lipton or the
Gran Premio de Honor Argentino. Because this tournament featured three of the subsequent four founding members of CONMEBOL, it sometimes called the first
Copa América. However, CONMEBOL recognise the
1916 South American Championship as the first Copa America.
The tournament was the league system. The three games were in
Buenos Aires in three different stadiums, in Cancha de Gimnasia y Esgrima, Cancha de Belgrano and in the Colegiales en Palermo out. All three stages then took approximately 8,000 - 10,000 spectators. There was no qualifying for the tournament. The participating countries were
Argentina,
Chile and
Uruguay.
