The
2006 Women's African Football Championship was originally scheduled to be held in
Gabon, but due to "organisational reasons" Gabon withdrew from hosting the competition.
Nigeria took over hosting rights,, from
RSSSF, retrieved November 3, 2006 and won the tournament after defeating
Ghana 1–0 in the final. South Africa's
Portia Modise was named Player of the Championship.
Qualifying Tournament
Eight teams make it through to the main tournament in Nigeria, and the teams played in a
single-elimination tournament until eight teams remained for the finals.
Preliminary round
First round
Winners, in
bold, progressed to the second round. Matches were played on 11 March and 12 March 2006 (1st leg), and 25 March and 26 March 2006 (2nd leg).
Second round
Matches took place on 23 July and 6 August.

The finals will take place in
Warri at
