36 China Town is a
2006 Bollywood comedy film directed by
Abbas-
Mustan. A Bollywood adaptation of
Once Upon A Crime (1992), the film is a murder mystery that follows the investigation of a police officer trying to find the killer of a wealthy casino owner, Sonia Chang.
The film stars
Shahid Kapoor and
Kareena Kapoor in their second film together along with actor,
Upen Patel making his debut. Other cast members include
Akshaye Khanna,
Paresh Rawal,
Johnny Lever,
Payal Rohatgi and Tanaz Lal with a special appearance by
Isha Koppikar and guest appearances by
Priyanka Chopra and
Tanushree Dutta.
It did moderately well at the box office, becoming an above average grosser.
Plot
China Town, in Goa, India, is a major tourist attraction because of its scenic beauty and casinos. Chief Inspector Karan (
Akshaye Khanna) of Goa police is told that an anonymous phone call has been received informing that the owner of 36 China Town and Hollywood Casino, Sonia Chang (
Isha Koppikar), has been murdered. When the police rush to the site, they do not find a dead body but, instead, several hand and foot prints, including those of aspiring Bollywood actor, Raj Malhotra (
Shahid Kapoor); a runaway girl, Priya (
Kareena Kapoor); an addictive gambler and hotel owner, Natwar (
Paresh Rawal); his wife, Gracy (
Payal Rohatgi); a visitor from Bombay, K.K. (
Johnny Lever); his wife Ruby (
Tanaaz Currim); and a assailant, Naseer Ahmed (
