In addition to the dress listed below, further colour and splendour is brought to occasions where formal
academic dress is worn by the gold trimmed gowns and hats of the senior University officers (the Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellors, the Vice-Chancellor and the Pro-Vice-Chancellors.)
Gowns
At the
University of Nottingham the diploma, undergraduate and masters
gowns are made from black fabric. The gowns of
Doctors of Philosophy and other first doctorates are
claret, while higher doctoral gowns are made from
scarlet cloth.
Hoods
Undergraduate diploma graduates wear a hood lined with the University blue silk and postgraduate diploma graduates wear a hood lined with Sherwood green silk. For information regarding hood classifications, see
hereAll degree graduates wear a hood. All degree hoods are partially or fully lined with light blue silk which is the University colour. The hood is also trimmed with a coloured ribbon which indicates the faculty and the level of degree being awarded.
