Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a modern martial art form that is well known today
for its influence on mixed martial arts. Very similar
to Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, this modern day self defense was developed by the Gracie
family of Brazil blending these traditional martial arts together. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) today is mainly renowned for its impact on the UFC and other mixed martial arts tournaments, but
it's also studied by many people for its value as a system of self defense.
During the 1990s, Royce Gracie of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship)
tournament fame won a number of of these competitive events making BJJ famous as a
result. The Jiu-Jitsu strategies that
Gracie used during the competitive events made it possible for him to beat
opponents that were stronger and bigger than he was almost every time. What BJJ teaches is that by using your strength by means of chokes and holds, it is possible to defeat a person twice your size using these advanced techniques. Even though the edgy
extreme fighting techniques seen in the earlier years with BJJ students have toned down considerably,
followers still use a mix of ground fighting systems and Jiu-Jitsu to gain the upper advantage.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is generally considered a brutal martial art form. This is mostly because people see the tactics employed in competitions
where bloody and battered opponents fight each other on a regular basis. Nevertheless, BJJ can also be learned by folks of all ages who aren't interested in becoming cage
fighters. Many young children nowadays are usually taught these
strategies as a form of self-defense. Quite often,
these techniques are focused upon grappling, not hitting or striking your opponent which makes it much
easier to practice without injuring one another. BJJ is actually presented as a form of self-defense by many martial arts schools
nationwide. Some of the schools were actually founded by the Gracie family - these are considered pure BJJ
schools. For individuals who are primarily interested in BJJ for self defense purposes, it's possible to learn a lot by taking brief but intensive seminars taught by qualified instructors.
Because of the widespread popularity of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, there are numerous books, videos and courses for sale that teach these techniques. If you actually want to learn how to do the BJJ tactics, it is recommended that you look for a qualified instructor to teach you instead of getting an instruction manual. At the very least, if you will learn a
martial art style from videos or DVDs, you must have a partner to practice with. Consider this - BJJ is about ground fighting and grappling with someone else,
something you can't do practicing the moves alone. So, while training materials such as books and videos can always
be helpful, they're not enough to make you a BJJ pro.
Undoubtedly, one of the most exciting and strategic fighting techniques developed in the last century is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This system, created from the Japanese martial arts tactics of old, is a new system created from more simplistic
forms of these techniques. Anyone can learn how to do BJJ due to its simplified and practical format. Just like anything else, once you begin learning how to do BJJ, you need to be consistent and learn from an instructor at a school near you.
