Ajay Maken was born in a family of Freedom Fighters. His grand-father, Om Prakash Maken, responded to the clarion call of Mahatma Gandhi in 1942 and took part in the freedom struggle.He was arrested by the British Government and sent to jail. In recognition of his services, Late O.P.Maken was presented the “Tamara Patra” by the Indian Government which he received with all humility but surrendered the Freedom Fighters pension towards the “Prime Ministers Relief Fund”.
Ajay Maken surged in his political career after becoming the President of Delhi University Students Union
(DUSU) in 1985,which was largely due to sympathy wave generated by the assassination of his uncle, Lalit Maken a young, dynamic and hugely popular leader of the Congress. He was following in the footsteps of his Grandfather & Uncle Lalit Maken, who was also a renowned trade union leader.
In 1993 he became a member of Legislative Assembly of Delhi as an Indian National Congress, winning by a margin of around 4,000 votes. He won when only 14 out of 70 candidates of Indian National Congress could win the elections to Legislative Assembly of Delhi. He was the only INC candidate to secure more than 50-percent of total votes polled.
