Al Ahly is the most supported club in Benghazi and is famous in Libya for its passionate, loyal and sometimes wildly violent crowds, who stood by the club through frustrating times. In 2000 the club's stadium was demolished by the government without warning destroying many old and traditional artefacts of the club. The demolition appears to have been carried out in response to fans insulting Saadi Gaddafi by dressing a donkey in a shirt baring his squad number.
The club have been given of land) for a new ground but doesn't have the money to develop it. The local derby between Al Ahly and Al Nasr guarantees a very intense atmosphere and one or two riots if not more. There are many clubs in Benghazi but this is the biggest derby in Benghazi as Al Ahly and Al Nasr are the two clubs with the most fans. This derby is,along with Tripoli's derby, the most prevalent in Libya.
