Alain Berset (born April 9, 1972 in Fribourg) is a member of the Swiss Council of States since 2003 and its president during the 2008/2009 term. Berset was elected to the council in 2003 for the Canton of Fribourg, as a member of the Social Democratic Party.

Born in Fribourg, Berset studied political science and economics at the University of Neuchâtel and at the international institute for economics in Hamburg. He received a Ph.D in Economics from the University of Neuchâtel in 2005 and a masters in Political Science in 1996. He is the author of several books and some 30 articles on economic development, migration and regional development.

Berset is vice-president of the social democratic group in the Swiss parliament since 2006. He is a member of the parliamentary assembly of the OSCE. He was re-elected in the year 2007.
