Albert I from the House of Meinhardin was the younger son of Meinhard III, Count of Gorizia, who had inherited the County of Tyrol in 1253.

After his father's heirloom of Gorizia-Tyrol had been split with his elder brother Meinhard II in 1271, he received the County of Gorizia. He struggled with the Republic of Venice to defend his possessions in Istria while he was able to increase his lands in the March of Carniola.

Albert married Euphemia, daughter of the Piast duke Konrad I of Głogów and after her death in 1275 Euphemia of Ortenburg. He had two sons:
  • Henry III, born 1263, Count of Gorizia from 1304 to 1323
  • Albert II, Count of Gorizia from 1304 to 1327.

Albert died in 1304, but the Gorizia line of the Meinhardiner dynasty survived until the death of his descendant Count Leonhard in 1500. The county was inherited by Maximilian I of Habsburg.
