Punjabi surname

The surname Bakshi is found among Sikh, Hindu and Muslim Punjabi. It is derived from the Persian word for paymaster. Bakshis were traditionally members of the Khatri and Brahmin castes. They traditionally are from areas of Punjab (Rawalpindi area) and the North-West Frontier Province that now fall in Pakistan. They relocated to India at the time of the partition of India in 1947.
