Birati () is a neighbourhood in the
Dum Dum municipality area, in the
North 24 Parganas district in the
state of
West Bengal, India. It is located at the east of Calcutta (now called
Kolkata), beside the
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport at
Dum Dum. It is considered to be a part of Greater Kolkata or KMA, for which
KMDA is the planning and development authority.
Birati's closeness to dumdum junction also enables residents to travel by the metro railways.
The pollution level in this place is still very low compared to Kolkata, but nowadays with a gradual spreading of so-called metro civilization it is also in the way of changes, but still green field, ponds and small muddy roads are there as well as new markets such as 'More', 'Spencers' and shopping complex such as 'Angana'. Now a bigbazar mall is at birati.
Etymology
The most popular thesis for the emergence of the name 'Birati' is the military forces used to take a rest in this place during their movements and for that place was named as
biroti which means 'rest' in
Bengali. Over time the name changed to 'Birati'.
