Publication history
The Blue Area of the Moon was created by
Jack Kirby and
Stan Lee, and first appeared in
Fantastic Four #13 (April 1963).
Background
An artificial, self-sustaining, Earth-like environment on the far side of the
Moon, the Blue Area was created roughly 100,000 years ago as part of a competition between two alien races, the
Kree and the
Cotati. The
Skrulls, then a benevolent race, moderated this contest, whose goal was to determine the worthiness of both races by discovering which could create a more suitable habitation. The Cotati won the contest by creating a long-term sustainable
ecosystem, while the Kree created a city, but the Kree angrily rebelled and attacked the Skrulls, stole their
starship, and initiated the millennia-long conflict now known as the
Kree-Skrull War, which would force the Skrulls to become a society of warriors.
The Blue Area has played a pivotal role in many events in the history of the Marvel Universe. It is the site of the first battle between the
Fantastic Four and the
Red Ghost.
Fantastic Four #13 (April 1963) It is also the home of

Watcher, a cosmic being who observes Earth and its alternate realities. In the ending to "
The Dark Phoenix Saga", where, to prevent herself from endangering any more lives,
Phoenix commits
suicide with ancient weaponry discovered on site.
