Though he was raised a Catholic, Marley soon became interested in the Rastafarian faith and he officially converted in the 1960's after he had left his mother's home. He began to wear dreadlocks, which inevitably became his reggae trademark and much of his music was profoundly affected by his Rastafarian views, which included vegetarianism, the smoking of marijuana and the return of Haile Selassie, a former king of Ethiopia, as the Messiah.
