Description:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a contemporary martial art style that is well known today

for its influence on mixed martial arts. Created by the Gracie family of Brazil, it's a

mix of traditional Japanese fighting techinques such as Judo and Jiu-Jitsu and

modern day self defense techniques. Not only has Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) had an influence on self-defense in general, but it has also had a major impact on the UFC mixed martial arts

events that are very popular nowadays.

In the 1990s, Royce Gracie of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship)

tournament fame won many of these competitions making BJJ famous as a

result. His ground fighting methods became legend, particularly because Gracie was much smaller than many of the

adversaries that he defeated using his Jiu-Jitsu techniques. The concept of leveraging your strength, specifically using the choke holds that BJJ

highlights, makes your physical size or strength immaterial in these situations. It is the ground fighting strategies of Jiu-Jitsu,

mixed with other fighting methods, that allows the students of BJJ to have an

edge, though, in the last several years, the use of these techniques is not as extreme.

As compared to other forms of martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is viewed as quite violent. This is because it's often linked to mixed martial arts tournaments, where fighters are often battered and bloody. Even if you don't wish to participate in cage fighting, BJJ is something that just about everyone can learn effectively. Kids these days use the same strategies to defend

themselves. This kind of self defense and fighting is actually not overly traumatic; kids can practice together through grappling, and not have a scrape on them after practicing for hours.

Nowadays, BJJ is incorporated into many martial arts schools as part of their

programs. The Gracie family has in reality founded several schools that teach pure BJJ

methods. So if you know a certified teacher, it is possible to learn self strategies based in BJJ.

These courses are often intense but very brief enabling you to learn

rather quickly.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become extremely popular in the last several years, and this widespread popularity

has spawned the creation of videos and books on this self-defense system. It is possible to learn

the many BJJ methods that are available, however, you would be better off with a human

instructor that can teach you instead. At the very least, if you will learn a martial art from videos or DVDs, you should have a partner to practice with. Think about it - BJJ is about ground fighting and grappling with someone else,

something you cannot do practicing the moves on your own. So, while training materials such as books and videos can invariably

be handy, they are not enough to make you a BJJ professional.

Lots of people agree that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the very best types of martial arts

to come along in a while. Although it's based in older Japanese martial arts, the techniques were refined and perfected and a new system was made. It is easy to learn BJJ - actually, you may find it helpful and practical. Like other things, once you begin learning how to do BJJ, you have to be consistent and learn from an instructor at a school near you.
