The 27th District covers a large portion of the Gateway Cities area of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. Also known as the Greater Long Beach area, the seat takes in the southeast corner of Los Angeles County. The district primarily includes middle class neighborhoods, and was one of the areas worst affected by the collapse of defense and aerospace industry in the early 1990s.
Redistricting solidified Democratic control of the 27th. Heavily Republican Palos Verdes and marginally Democratic areas in the Harbor area of Los Angeles were removed and the solidly Democratic cities of Lynwood and Paramount were added.
