Cape Agulhas Municipality
is a municipality located in the Western Cape Province
of South Africa
. As of 2001, the population was 26,182. Its municipality code is WC033.
The mayor of the municipality is Richard Mitchell of the African National Congress
(ANC), which took control of the municipality after the March 2006 local government elections and secured 5 of the 10 seats in the council. Willem Petrus Schonken of the Democratic Alliance
(DA) was the previous executive mayor who was elected in December 2000 when the DA won 6 of the 10 seats. The DA has survived two floor crossing windows in Cape Agulhas despite being toppled in 2002 in most other Western Cape municipalities. Prior to this the Cape Agulhas Local Municipality (formerly known as Bredasdorp) was governed by the ANC after the November 2005 local government elections.
It is divided into five wards with a total of ten councillors.
The municipality has a total area of 2,411 km².
The municipality also borders the Atlantic
oceans on the south.
