Car Rental Cheaper Than The Train
With one more rise in rail fees recently becoming active, looking for an alternative to high fare prices is on the to do list for many organisations, not least this one! Before now we used to travel by train reguarlywhether it was for business purposes, leisure reasons or journeys home to see our families, however that changed a couple of months ago. After attempting to purchase tickets from London to the West Midlands we were sure that there had to besome other way other than paying more than £200 for two peak return tickets on an inconvenient and uncomfortable train…and thanks goodness there was!
We set to our boycott of the railways by renting a tiny car from Enterprise which transported us from London to Durham and back for approximately £65. The corresponding train fare for one person is currently £120, so if the two of us were travelling that is a big amount to save even when gas prices are included. Plus the savings from tube fares to get us to the train station and back again, and the added benefit of flexibility in terms of when we start our journey was sufficient to persuade us that car rental was right for us and our business. We've also rented a few of the larger and more elite cars and have still found that it is cheaper than taking the train.
It is important to note, however, that you must be 25 or over to rent from Enterprise and that the excess if you have a prang or a crash is £600, which is a great deal of money. You can also take out more insurance from Enterprise which reduces the excess down to £100 and only costs £10 per day. Enterprise also offer weekend deals available which mean that you can get a car for as little as £15 per day on a Saturday and Sunday!

Renting Enterprise cars for days or weekends away is ideal, but every now and then we just need access to a car for a couple of hours. Enter Zipcar! Up to now we have not used Zipcar for company purposes, however we have used it a fewtimes to get us from our home in North to the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead. This journey usually costs us around £25 for the 2 of us on the train, plus the price of travelling to the train station, and takes approximately 2 hours from door to door. With a Zipcar it also sets us back approximately £25 but only takes fifty minutes. A great plus point of Zipcar is that petrol is free of charge for the 1st forty miles, so our gas costs have been extremely low indeed.
I would suggest this type of transport to anyone who would like to side step inflated train fare prices, and who would like a spot more flexibility. It may be comparable to the train when it comes to cost (at least for the journeys we have undertaken), however you are very likely to save on time and stress.

We are definitely rental car converts!
