Mabel "Madea" Simmons is the matriarch of the Simmons family. She was born to Mabel Murphy and Frederick Joseph Baker on May 29, 1935. Madea has two siblings;Irene and Joe. She had one child with Deacon Brown (Cora) and two with Jonny Simmons (Michelle and William). She graduated from high school in 1953 and supported herself and her family by working as a stripper. She lives at 1197 Avon Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia, next to her friends Deacon and Ella Kincaid. She owns a 1970 Cadillac, but she drove other vehicles as well, including a 2001 Toyota Avalon and a 2011 Hyundai Sonata.

Deacon Leroy Brown is Madea's best friend, ex-boyfriend, neighbor and the father of her daughter Cora. Brown is the same age as Madea, and they both graduated in the class of 1953. Brown also drives a 1970s car. Brown is currently living in his father's old house that he is now using as a retirement home. Brown is the brother of Larry Brown and Vera Brown. His wife Mattie died of Alzheimer's, after which he cremated her and now keeps her ashes in a red Pringles can. In Madea's Big Happy Family is stated Mr. Brown is not Cora's father.
