Charles Dickens Elementary is a public elementary school in Vancouver, British Columbia. The school is part of School District 39 Vancouver. Along with Tyee Elementary's and Maple Grove Elementary's Montessori programs, Dickens and Dickens Annex are the only schools in the district that regularly have multi-age groupings throughout the school (e.g., classes with 2-4 grades mixed together and students stay with the same teacher for up to 4 years). Dickens does not include letter grades in report cards for intermediate students, although it must produce them if a parent requests them.
History
Named after author Charles Dickens, the school opened in 1912. A new school was built on the old school's field during the 2007–08 school year to seismically upgrade the facility. To preserve Dickens’ historical value to the community, the new building incorporated remnants of the old school foundation, as well as some interior features from the old brick school.
