Charlottesville City Public Schools is the branch of the government of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia responsible for operating the Charlottesville public school system. Like all public school systems in the state, it is legally termed a school division instead of a "school district" because it is a division of its associated local government, and has no independent taxing authority. The current superintendent is Dr. Rosa Atkins.
Schools
The school system comprises four levels of school which are, in order from earliest to latest: Elementary, Upper Elementary, Middle and High schools.
Unlike most traditional American school systems, Charlottesville City schools have an Upper Elementary which adds an additional step between Elementary school and Middle/Jr. High school. The school is Walker Upper Elementary school and it teaches Fifth grade and Sixth grade.
