Chikusei City is in the west of Ibaraki Prefecture and is located on the west side of Mt. Tsukuba. Chikusei City consists of the former city of Shimodate and the former towns of Akeno, Kyōwa, and Sekijō, all from Makabe District. They were merged on March 28, 2005. The population of Chikusei City is about 110,000. There are two rivers in the city, Kinu-gawa and Kokai-gawa. The city is surrounded by nature. A well-balanced city, it develops farming, industry, and commerce. Special products of Chikusei city include koshihikari(rice), nashi (pears), small watermelons, cucumbers, strawberries, and tomatoes.
