Chiplun (
Marathi: चिपळूण) is a city and a
municipal council in
Ratnagiri district in the state of
Maharashtra,
India. Located on the
Mumbai–
Goa highway (NH-17) in western
India. The city is about 320 km south of Mumbai in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. It is an industrial town catering to mostly pharmaceutical and chemical industries. It is a major stop on the
Konkan Railway. The name
Chiplun means "The abode of Lord
Parshurama".
Geography
The city lies on the banks of the
River Vashishti. To the east of the city lies the
Western Ghats and to the west lies
Guhagar. The region is hilly and the city is situated in a valley. The region has tropical climate, very hot in summer and very wet. Summer days are extremely hot (above 38 °C). The rainy season — the
monsoons last from June until October. Chiplun is near to "Koyna Dam". The 'Kumbharli Ghat' situated in Chiplun is a main route for road transport, connecting the Konkan with the Vidharbha.

census, Chiplun had a population of 46,213. Male constituted 50% of the population and female 50%. Chiplun had an average literacy rate of 0%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 0% and female literacy of 0%. 12% of the population was under 6 years of age.
