Editor of the Communist Party newspaper "for intellectuals" Guangming Ribao in the post-1949 era, Chu was purged during the Anti-Rightist campaign, following publication of an article entitled "The Party Dominates the World." It is believed that he committed suicide in 1966. He was father to Chu Wanghua, a contemporary Chinese composer.
