Description:
The
Cordillera Oriental
() is one of three main mountain ranges that divides the Cordillera in the
Andes Mountains
of
Colombia
.
It extends from southeast to northeast from the "
Colombian Massif
" in
Huila
to the
Perijá Mountains
in
La Guajira
.
The western part of the Cordillera Oriental belongs to the
Magdalena River
basin, while the eastern part includes the river basins of the
Amazon River
,
Orinoco
, and
Catatumbo
.
Within the relief the
Altiplano Cundiboyacense
and the
Sierra Nevada del Cocuy
stand out (with the only snowy peaks in this particular mountain range).
The Cordillera Oriental is the main feature in the relief of
Cundinamarca
,
Boyacá
,
Santander
, and
Norte de Santander
. It forms the eastern and southeastern limits of
Huila
,
Tolima
,
Cesar
, and
La Guajira
, with its southern piedmont reaching to the western regions of
Caquetá
,
Meta
,
Casanare
, and
Arauca
.
