Daniel Grian Alexander (born 15 May 1972) is a Scottish politician and the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey. Currently the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, he was formerly the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary for Work and Pensions.

Early life, career and education

Born in Edinburgh, Alexander lived on the island of Colonsay as a boyDinwoodie, Robin (31 May 2010) "The boy from Colonsay takes on critical job at Treasury". Glasgow; The Herald. and was later educated at Lochaber High School, a state comprehensive school in Fort William in the Highlands of Scotland. He then went on to St Anne's College, Oxford, where he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics. In 1993, Alexander became a press officer with the Scottish Liberal Democrats, until he became the Director of Communications at the European Movement in 1996, remaining in this role when the organisation was subsumed into the now-defunct Britain in Europe campaign, in 1999. In 2004, he became the Head of Communications for the Cairngorms National Park.
