Darnah ( ), also spelled Derna, is a city with a population of 200,000 (2010 census). The city is a port city in Eastern Libya. It was the seat of one of the wealthiest provinces in the Barbary States, and remains the capital of Darnah District, with a much smaller area. The city is also home to many Greek immigrants from the island of Crete. Darnah has a unique location from all other Libyan cities, it lies between the green mountains, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Desert. The city is also home to people of mixed origins.

Following the 2011 mass protests, on the 18th of February the city is reported to be under control of the Libyan opposition, not the government of Muammar al-Gaddafi.


Darnis and Darne were the Greek forms of the name for the city,Ptolemy (IV, 4, 2; 5; 6) while sometimes the form Dardanis is found, it was due to an error. Under Rome it was referred to as Darnis and Derna. Under Islam, it was known as Derneh (Derne, Dernah) or Terneh (Ternah).
