Deng Shichang

Deng Shichang (; 1849 - 17 September 1894) was a famous Chinese admiral during the late Qing Dynasty era. Native of Panyu, Guangdong; originally named as Yongchang (永昌); courtesy name Zhengqing (正卿).

Deng was the first generation of modern naval officers trained in China. He entered the Naval Academy (船政學堂) in Mawei, Fujian in 1867 and graduated in 1874. He rose through the ranks and became the captain of the cruiser Chih Yuen in 1887. He died in combat during the First Sino-Japanese War.

In 1996, the People's Liberation Army Navy named a naval training ship as Shichang in remembrance of him.
