Dilawar Singh Babbar was a serving police officer in the
Punjab Police of India at the time of his becoming a human bomb. He joined
Babbar Khalsa International, during his service in the
Punjab Police and volunteered to become a suicide bomber to assassinate Beant Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab. He assassinated Beant Singh by blowing up his bullet-proof car at 5 p.m. on August 31, 1995 in the Punjab and Haryana Civit Secretariat, Chandigarh.
Beant Singh was made chief minister of Punjab even though more than 90% of voters had boycotted the 1992 state elections.
Dilawar Singh's mother, Bibi Surjit Kaur, and father, Baba Harnek Singh, live in Guru Nanak Nagar,
Patiala,
Punjab,
India. His father was a government employee. His elder brother works for a private company.
His death anniversary functions are regularly held in India and abroad. The Khalsa Action Committee (KAC), an umbrella organization of several hardline Sikh organizations, honoured the father and mother of Dilawar Singh, Harnek Singh and Surjit Kaur with the Shaheed Baba Deep Singh gold medal at a function in the city of
Amritsar. He was also given the title of 'pride of the nation' by religious sikhs.
