The Electronic Money Association (EMA) is the trade body representing electronic money issuers in Europe.


The EMA was founded in October 2001 by a group of electronic money issuers.


The EMA is the trade body representing electronic money issuers and payment institutions. It brings together payments companies, the telecommunications and transport sectors as well as specialist e-money issuers to address issues of common interest and to act in the interest of the industry as a whole. The EMA represents industry with regulators, government bodies as well as international organisations. It responds to regulatory proposals, drafts industry guidelines and acts as a forum for communication and education.


The EMA is a committee with sub-committees formed to address areas of special concern including:


Members of the Electronic Money Association and its subcommittees meets on a monthly basis in Central London. Additionally, the EMA organizes seminars and hold an annual conference:

  • The first EMA Conference on The Revision of the E-money Directive was held in February 2006 in Brussels, Belgium.
  • The second EMA Conference on Future of Payments in Europe was held in November 2007 in London, UK.
