The Musical tells the story of Elisabeth ("Sissi") the Empress of Austria from 1854 to her murder in 1898 at the hands of the mad Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni who is in turn working for his master - Death who pursues a love/hate relationship with the Empress that lasts throughout her life.

The Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni
is been tried by an offstage judge for the "terrible murder of the Empress of Austria" Lucheni has been dead for 100 year's but every night he must answer questions about Elisabeth's murder. Lucheni insists that Elisabeth wanted to die and as proof brings forth a chorus of Austrian aristocrats who sing of how they never fully understood the Empress ("Prologue"). Lucheni then summons "his majestey" Death who admits that he once loved Elisabeth although he can't figure out why because he has no feelings of love inside him.
