The 2005 European Basketball Championship, commonly called Eurobasket 2005, was held in Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro between 16 September and 25 September 2005. The FIBA European Basketball Championship is a bi-annual basketball competition between national teams organised by FIBA Europe, the sport's governing body in Europe. This is the third time that championship is hosted by city of Belgrade (previously in 1961 and 1975).

Competition format

The Eurobasket competition format comprises two divisions, Division A and Division B both of which play parallel to each other . Although their games take place at the same time, they compete for two very different goals.

Division A competing for the honours of being the champions of Europe, and for a berth in the Basketball World Championship. The qualifying round involves five groups of four teams playing a double round-robin tournament, whereby the winner receives 2 points and loser receives 1 point. The top two teams in each group qualify to the final round, the remaining ten teams then compete in the additional qualifying round. It is organized into three groups of four, again playing a double round-robin tournament.
