Ezhavathy or Ezhawati
are a traditional Vaid and Purohit in Kerala.They are an Indo-Aryan tribe who once strictly followed all rituals in Hindu community.They consist of Purohit,Nayee Brahmin and Kshatriyas.They are a distinct category of Brahmin with military traditions. They also known as Kavutheeya or Kavuthiyya in Malabar area.It is said that they are consisting of Brahmin and Royal family concerned to Chera dynasty and Pandya dynasty.They are also known as 'Kuruppan' or 'Kuruppanmar' .
The word 'Ezhavathy' dervied from Ezhava + vazhthy, it means those who 'protected' Ezhava is known as Ezhavathy.Kavutheeya is derived from 'Kavu' + Theeya, that means those who entrusted 'Kavu' or forest to Theeya for living.
They did cow worship and most of them used cow milk and its products.
Perumal VaidyaEzhawati vaid in the Sree Padmanabha palace are known as Perumal vaidya.Many Perumal vaidya family still say at Kallambalam in Thiruvananthapuram district.
The main deity of this community was Kalika and Bhagavathy.They were also priests in all Bhadrakali and Bhagavathy temples in Kerala.They also worshipped Ganapathy,Murukan,Siva, Vishnu etc.
