The Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) is the organization that governs international chess competition. At two-month intervals, FIDEpublishes ratings of the best international chess players, as wellas a ranking of the top 100 active players. The Elo rating system is used.

Women may play in the same events as men in chess and are rated together with the men. As of May 2011, the highest rated woman player is Judit Polgár, ranked 41st, althoughPolgar has previously ranked as high as eighth.
