Overview

Founded in London, England in 1929, Freed of London Ltd is a dancewear supplier, noted for the manufacture of pointe shoes, a specialist dance shoe most commonly associated with classical ballet. Usually referred to simply as Freed, the company is now the leading distributor of pointe shoes in the world and supplies shoes for almost all the leading ballet schools and companies. The company is also noted for being one of the few pointe shoe manufacturers still supplying predominantly hand-made products.

Freed also make a variety of other dance products, including soft ballet shoes, jazz shoes, tap shoes and ballroom shoes, leotards, tights, socks, knitwear, dance belts and practice or warmup attire. Freed are the official manufacturer of uniform for the Royal Academy of Dance, the world's largest dance teaching organisation, and are the official suppliers of pointe shoes to the Royal Ballet School in London, as well as numerous other professional ballet schools worldwide.

History

Freed of London was established in 1929, in by the cobbler Frederick Freed, his wife and an assistant. They had previously been employed by the Italian dance shoe maker Gamba, who was also based in London.
