There are 2 major varieties of springs, torsion and extension. Extension springs go above the tracks parallel to your ceiling. Torsion springs are wound about a bar that is above your garage door opening.
In most cases if one of your springs is busted it will be completely not possible to open your garage door. The exception is if you have a single door and it is made of a light metal. In any case it is best not to attempt to open your door yourself. It may lead to injury.

However here's an item you can and should fix for yourself. When you have an opener, you also have some sort of interrupter device that keeps the door from closing if its path is blocked.
At the foot of the tracks on either side of your garage door opening, you will most likely locate a pair of stop/reverse lights. These lights are really a transmitter plus a receiver of infrared beams. If the beam is interrupted your door will stop going down, reverse and go all the way back up. Usually your garage door light will flash when this happens.
Does your garage go down, then back up for no perceptible reason? If you've carefully looked for for an object in the way of the door and can't find anything, you may have bumped your stop/reverse lights out of alignment.
The primary cause for this beam to be interrupted is that there's something blocking it. Seek and eliminate the thing that is blocking the beam and also you're quite possibly good to go.
If you've looked high and low for the article blocking your garage door to the point that you have become frustrated, it may be that nothing is blocking it. Sometimes a fleck of dust, an insect or condensation has gotten on the lenses of your stop/reverse lights. Wipe the lenses with a dry cloth and see if that works.
If cleaning the lenses doesn't make your issue go away, the responsibility may lie with your garage door opener. You might have a bad sprocket or bad logic board.
Both of these items will be fixed by the enterprising home owner if he so choses. But for both of them you may require the parts. You may be capable to purchase a gear sprocket replacment set at one of the massive field stores. For the logic board, you'll need to speak to the supplier of your opener.
