The general elections in India are the elections by which the Indian electorate chooses the various members of the Lok Sabha in the Parliament for the next term of five years. The electorate also indirectly votes for the Prime Minister as the leader chosen by the majority party or the majority coalition becomes the next Prime Minister.

The general elections are the largest election exercise in the world.

Due to the completion of the Indian general election, 2009, the next election should take place by 2014 according to the constitution of India. The Prime Minister can ask the President to have the election earlier if he/she chooses. The current ruling party losing the motion of confidence can also potentially result in an election occurring much earlier.
