Description:
George Joseph (5 June 1887 – 5 March 1938) was born at Chengannur in Travancore now in Kerala. He was an Indian independence activist. He was born a Syrian Christian and later became a Syrian Catholic. He was a UK educated Barrister in law. He set up his practice in Madurai after returning from UK. He was imprisoned several times during the freedom struggle. He joined the Home Rule Movement after meeting Annie Besant on March 20, 1916. He protested against the Rowlatt Act in Madurai in 1919and also led the Vaikom Satyagraha briefly and was jailed. He was also the editor of a newspaper called Independent and also Young India when Gandhi was in Jail. He was also elected from the Madras Presidency. He died in Madurai.
