established with the full funding of state government. It was founded in 1989 when the Governor of Punjab Sh.S.S.Ray laid the foundation stone on October 23rd. It is named after Giani Zail Singh
, the seventh President of India.
Set up as Government Engineering College, it was converted to an autonomous institute in 1992 and a Board of Governors was constituted to manage the affairs of the College. The Chairman of the Board of Governors is the Chief Executive for technical education in the state, and the other members include industrialists, academicians, and senior representatives of the state government. The college is affiliated with the Punjab Technical University
.It was inaugurated approximately 4 years before NIT Jalandhar. It is semi autonomous in nature.
The college is located on the out skirts of Bathinda on Dabwali road. It is:
- 7km from the railway station.
- 5km from the bus stand.
- 210km from Chandigarh.
- 300km from Delhi by rail and 345km by bus.
- 155km from Patiala.
The college is affiliated to Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar and follows semester system of education. Each academic year is divided into two semester- July/August to December and January to June/July. University examinations are held at the end of each semester.
