Description:
The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District is a quasi-governmental corporation that owns and operates three regional transportation assets in the San Francisco Bay Area:
The District's transit and ferry service augments local bus transit routes operated by public and private carriers within each county, as well as private ferry service across San Francisco Bay.
The District's largest revenue source is a $6 toll on the southbound lanes of the Golden Gate Bridge leading into San Francisco. A surplus from the bridge operation, as well as government subsidies, is used to support bus transit and ferry service.
The District is headquartered in San Francisco. Its Board of Directors has nineteen members who represent all six counties.
