Description:
Gounder () is a caste title used by different communities from the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The title or its variant is also used by some in the Tamil diaspora around the world. In Tamil Nadu, the title predominantly refers to the Kongu Vellalars but it is also used by the Vettuva Gounders, Vanniars and Vokkaligas.

Etymology

There are number of derivations for the title. One theory derives the name Gounder from Tamil word Kaamindan, meaning protector of the country. It was later modified as Kavundan or Gounder. Another meaning is derived from Ka Meendar or destroyer of the forest who makes it available for cultivation.
