Hans Albert Einstein
(May 14, 1904 – July 26, 1973) was a professor at University of California, Berkeley
, in the field of hydraulic engineering
. He was the second child, and the first son, of renowned physicist Albert Einstein
(1879–1955) and his first wife, Mileva Marić
(1875–1948). His papers are held by the Water Resources Center Archives
at UC Berkeley.
Family and personal
Hans Albert was born in Bern
, Switzerland, where his father, Albert Einstein, worked as a clerk in the patent office
. His younger brother, Eduard Einstein
, was born in 1910 and died in 1965. The fate of his older sister, Lieserl Einstein
, Albert Einstein's and Mileva Marić's first child, is unknown. Their parents divorced in 1919 after living apart for five years.
In 1927 he married Frieda Knecht. They had three children — Bernhard Caesar
(b. 1930-2008), a physicist; Klaus Martin (1932–1938); and Evelyn (1941-2011), whom he adopted soon after her birth. Frieda died in 1958, and Hans Albert later married Elizabeth Roboz.
Upon his death Hans Albert was buried near Woods Hole, Massachusetts
, United States.
In tribute to Einstein's life-long contributions to the field, his former graduate students published a book of research in his honour in 1972, Sedimentation: Symposium to Honor Professor H.A. Einstein
