Henderson Field is a public airport located on Sand Island in Midway Atoll, an unincorporated territory of the United States. The airport was once used as an emergency diversion point for ETOPS operations. It is subsidized by Boeing. It still serves this capacity, most recently in June 2011.

Incidents and accidents
On June 18, 2011, a Delta Air Lines 747 flight from Honolulu to Osaka, Japan made an unscheduled 12-hour stopover on Midway Atoll after pilots noticed a crack in the cockpit window and made a precautionary landing. The aircraft landed safely at about 5:40 p.m. with 359 passengers and 19 crew members aboard. A replacement 747 arrived from Japan with mechanics and parts for the repair and flew the passengers to Japan at about 5 a.m. the next day.
