Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) formerly Scindia Shipyard is a Government of India owned Public Sector Undertaking located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh on the East coast of India.


It is the 22 day of June 1941 the "zero year" history to Indian ship building i.e., the ground breaker of Indian ship building industry "THE SCINDIA STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY's " foundation stone laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad who later became the first President of India.recorded in the history of subcontinent. the construction was done by the industrial patriot Walchand Hirachand & The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd. started the construction of the shipyard, initially known as Scindia Shipyard. Jal Usha, the first ship to be constructed fully in post-independence India was built here in 1948 and inaugurated by then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The shipyard was nationalized in 1961, and renamed as Hindustan Shipyard Limited. Now it is under Ministry of defense.

HSL is located in the picturesque port city of Visakhapatnam on the East coast of India. The shipyard is easily accessible by direct air, sea, rail and road connections from India and abroad. Today, HSL is a fully owned Government of India Undertaking under the Administrative control of the Ministry of Defence.
