Newcastle United Football Club is an
English professional
association football club based in
Newcastle upon Tyne,
Tyne and Wear. The club was formed in 1892 as a merger between
Newcastle East End and
Newcastle West End. The club was elected to
the Football League in the 1893-94 season. They have played in the
top league in England from the 1898-99 season until the 1934-35 season when they were relegated into the
Second Division. They have played in the top league in the periods 1948-61, 1965-78, 1984-89, 1993-2009, and then from 2010 to present. Newcastle are England's eighth most successful club of all time, having won the
English League championship four times: in 1905, 1907, 1909 and, most recently, in 1927. They have also been runners-up on a further two occasions: in 1997 and 1997 (see
Newcastle United F.C. seasons).
Newcastle have also won the
FA Cup six times: in 1910 against
Barnsley, in 1924 against
Aston Villa, in 1932 against
Arsenal, in 1951 against
Blackpool, in 1952 against Arsenal, and in 1955 against
Manchester City. They were finalists in 1905, 1906, 1908, 1911, 1974, 1998 and 1999, beaten by Aston Villa,
Everton,
Wolverhampton Wanderers,
Bradford City,
Liverpool, Arsenal and
Manchester United respectively. They were finalists in the 1976 Football League Cup Final, but were beaten by Manchester City. Their other honours include the 1910 Charity Shield, and the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
