How To Beat The Sunshine Coast Short Sight Epidemic
In many areas all over the world and throughout my home area of the Sunshine Coast short sight improvement is reaching epidemic proportions! Among youngsters and preteens that is especially true, and I imagine it may be blamed on the massive increase in screen-based viewing.
Common Causes of Short Sight
Short sight or myopia occurs when distance vision becomes blurry but near vision is preserved. In the standard model, the eyeball is described as being too long, causing the inadequate optics of the eye to focus distant objects in front of the retina. What many individuals don't realize is that before there may be any change within the axial length of the eyeball, there may be most often a spasming of focus.
When a child has to do an extreme quantity of close work, some children find it very difficult. To overcome this difficulty, they lock the focus on the objects in order that when they look up in the direction of the distance, their focus fails to totally relax, spasming short of the mark. If this is achieved for long enough, the gap becomes permanently blurry however their reading stays comfortable, and that is the beginning of short sight.
This is particularly true if they have a genetic predisposition to going shortsighted, which can happen within families and even within races (for example among Asians). If we had an excessive amount of close work to the genetics, and including elements such as diet and other influences, then we've a recipe for a rise in short sight among the young population.
On the Sunshine Coast Short Sight is Dramatically Rising
Where I dwell on the Sunshine Coast short sight is on the rise, especially in the young. The genetics haven't modified, the diet has not changed but the quantity of close work that children are doing has dramatically elevated, and to me that is the obvious trigger for the increase in short sight.
In the previous few years, with the appearance of iPods, Nintendo DS's and smartphones, children are doing more near work than ever before. They take a break from studying on the pc by enjoying a pc game, browsing the internet, hanging out on Facebook or texting friends. They are concentrating longer and harder than ever before at screen-based equipment, and to going outside far less than they've ever done before. This is tied in with the largest increase in short sight that we have ever seen on the Sunshine Coast.
Alternative ways of Treating Short Sight
On the Sunshine Coast short sight is handled in numerous ways. Traditional optometrists prescribe distance lenses which make things that are blurry in the distance more clear. The drawback is, they encourage the expansion of short sight in order that when children returned to those optometrist the prescription is considerably increased year after year. The vast majority of optometrist, particularly those related to large chains, deal with short sight in this way.
I am obsessed with reducing the amount of short sight among the children and teenagers of the Sunshine Coast. As a behavioural optometrist, I'm using cutting-edge spectacle lenses, contact lenses and my own especially designed vision therapy to help reduce short sight rather than increase it!
My passion is to see Sunshine Coast short sight managed and even decreased, but I work tirelessly and take each opportunity to see this dream come true. Check out short sighted treatment for more information.
