World No.1 Novak Djokovic will be looking to defend his title he won in such dramatic circumstances against Rafael Nadal last January. The Serbian star described the win as the best of his career:
"This one I think comes out on the top because just the fact that we played almost six hours is incredible, incredible. I think it's probably the longest finals in the history of all Grand Slams, and just to hear that fact is making me cry, really," Djokovic said after the final.
"I'm very proud just to be part of this history, part of the elite of the players that have won this tournament for several times, and I was very flattered to be playing in front of Rod Laver, in front of the all-time greats, and in front of 15,000 people that stayed until 1:30 a.m. It's incredible, really."
Four time Australian Open Champion, Roger Federer will be hoping to add a fifth title to his incredible CV. Federer reached the semi-final last year before losing to Nadal in four sets.
US Open Champion Andy Murray reached the final of the Australian Open in both 2010 and 2011 but has yet to claim the title in the Rod Laver Arena. Since winning his first Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows in September, Murray has not won a tournament since so will be looking to win back to back Grand Slam titles come January.
The big question many tennis fans have is whether or not 2009 champion Rafael Nadal will be back in time for the tournament on the 16th January. The Spanish star has not played since losing in the first round of Wimbledon back in July. Nadal would love to come back and gain revenge from his defeat last year. He spoke after the final of the efforts he went to in that unforgettable final:
"So today I had this feeling, and is a really good one. I enjoyed. I suffered during the match, but I enjoyed all the troubles that I had during all the match. I tried to be there, to find solutions all the time. I played a lot with my heart. I played a lot with my mind, and is something that is nice to be around and not just play tennis."
