J. Mahendran () (born: Alexander) is a film director in Tamil film industry, who is best known for his true narration of screenplay and making.
Mahendran made an immediate impact with his first film Mullum Malarum (1978). His next film Udhiri Pookal (1979) was based on a short story written by Pudumaipithan and firmly established him as an important film maker. His work stands apart stylistically, with a penchant for realism and sincerity of approach. Director Mani Ratnam once famously remarked: "If I get anywhere near what Mahendran did in Udhiri Pookkal, I’ll be a happy man." Mahendran has high regards for his cousin brother Eddy, who was a state football player and athlete at Alagappa Arts college, Karaikudi is 2 years his senior.
Mahendran changed his original name (Alexander) because of his respect towards his college senior and athlete Mahendran
Despite being totally away in movies of late for 15 years or so, he has high reputation among directors in the industry and applauds of public from his previous directed films, especially Udhiri Pookal (1979).
