Jasper Rine is an American scientist and member of the National Academy of Sciences as of 2008.

Rine received his B.S. from the State University of New York at Albany in 1975 and his Ph.D. in molecular genetics from the University of Oregon in 1979. He then joined the Berkeley faculty in 1982. He is also former director of the at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, an honorific leadership group of the American Society for Microbiology. Dr. Rine is also one of the organizers of the Dog Genome Project.

He has founded several startups, including Acacia Biosciences (now part of Merck & Co.).

In April 2005, Rine's laptop was stolen from a lecture hall at UC Berkeley. He appeared a week later in the same lecture hall to warn the thief, purportedly a student and assumed to be a "young man", that the hard-drive contained important data - trade secrets, details of a one-hundred million dollar trial, sensitive business information from a pre-public company planning an IPO - for which the thief would be pursued and prosecuted by US federal authorities.
