James Thomas Hieronymus (born July 29, 1976), better known as Jay Hieron, is an American professional mixed martial arts fighter. He is known for his wrestling base and heavy hands.

Hieron was the last welterweight champion of the now-defunct International Fight League. He is currently under contract to Bellator Fighting Championships, where he is the winner of the promotion's Season 4 welterweight tournament. The Xtreme Couture-based fighter holds notable victories over UFC welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger, Pat Healy, Jason High, Jesse Taylor, Joe Riggs, Brent Weedman, and Olympic judoka Rick Hawn. In his next bout, Hieron will challenge Ben Askren for the Bellator Welterweight Championship.

Early life

Hieron went to live with John and Theo Hieronymous when he was a newborn due to the fact that his mother had trouble raising him. He was officially adopted by the couple when he was eight years old.

Mixed martial arts career

Hieron, a two-time state wrestling championship runner-up at Freeport High School and national Junior College Champion at Nassau Community College, where he earned an Associates Degree, Hieron later attended Hofstra University. Before his senior year at Hofstra University, he tested positive for marijuana, and was unable to wrestle his senior year.
