The Jerusalem District is one of six administrative districts of Israel. Its land area is 652 km². Its population of about 910,300 is 67.8% Jewish and 30.6% Arab. The vast majority of the Arabs are East Jerusalem Palestinians who are Israeli residents eligible for citizenship under Israeli law, but non-citizen by collective choice. The minority of the Arabs are Israeli Arabs from Abu Ghosh, the Jerusalem neighbourhood of Beit Tzafafa (divided between Israel and Jordan 1948-1967) and East Jerusalem, where Israeli Arab professionals have settled since the late 1970s, mainly for the provision of legal and other services to the local population. The non-Jewish population is 28.3% Muslims, 1.8% Christians and 1.4% unclassified by religion. The district capital is Jerusalem.
